Informal solutions

What is it like to live in a poorly designed city?

As an industrial design student, I think it’s pretty safe to say that better design has yet to come. If you want to double check what I mean, here’s an Instagram page full of Briar Gill’s documented “good enough” human solutions. Not saying that these aren’t great solutions—I think they’re amazing design solutions funded entirely by the public themselves—but it does tell us that things could be better.

To answer the question, living in a poorly designed city can become frustrating when trying to make changes for the better is met with no it’s okay, it’s good enough. When your audience doesn’t see the value in your solutions and ideas yet, there’s nothing to do but to either implement your ideas on your own or to wait and see how long it takes for them to come back around.

We’re all guilty of saying no it’s okay, it’s good enough. It’s what tailgates an I told you so moment.
